Ann Overton

I am a UKCP registered systemic family and couples psychotherapist. I worked as a family psychotherapist within the NHS for 18 years. I am also involved in therapist education, training and supervision.

Systemic psychotherapists help those in close relationships to better understand and support each other. They enable family members to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on family strengths, and work together to make useful changes in their relationships and their lives.

Having worked with a wide range of clients, my therapy practice now focusses on working with couples and adult individuals who want help with relationship difficulties. My work with couples is influenced by Emotionally Focussed Therapy (EFT). EFT is a collaborative, structured approach. Couples often have between 8 and 20 sessions, although the actual number of sessions is not fixed and is tailored to your needs. A substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT now exists. The approach focuses on:

  • creating safety for couples to track how they are stuck in negative cycles

  • helping couples to explore and understand more about underlying emotions triggering these cycles

  • helping the couple to transform negative interaction patterns into safe emotional connection.

I celebrate individual diversity and practice as an LGBTQ+ friendly therapist.
